Something I started last January and worked at a bit today while waiting for other projects to dry….

This project began with a polyurethane skull, but I cut it and carved at it so much I might as well not have used it to begin with. Pulp mache base and some Paperclay on the main face features. This is the first project I’ve applied Paperclay to. I have to say, it sure is nice to work with.

Making your own skull mold isn’t as hard as you might think. A little bit of money invested into a mold will reward you with many skulls that can be used in endless ways.

Foam Skulls made with a Dragon Skin mold
I’ve made a few molds using Dragon Skin by Smooth-On. Dragon Skin is a soft, super stretchy silicone rubber. It stretches without tearing and always rebounds to its original shape without distortion. Smooth-On’s website has a great picture tutorial you can follow that explains how to use Dragon Skin, step by step. It’s worth a read. That being said, Continue Reading »

Another prop I want to bring with me this weekend so I finished her this afternoon…

I had sculpted her face last year before Halloween, and then she sat in the basement… bald, grumpy, and only half a body… collecting dust for MONTHS. Originally I thought I might make 3 of these hags, and this one was going to be leaning on her broom. Then while camping one of my kids found a nice walking stick and we decided to bring it home for the hag to use.

Earlier this year I met Wes Bourn (who makes some pretty amazing animated props!) and I bought one of his radio controlled zombie crawlers.
I sculpted a head for it recently.

I will make it some hands later today as I want to take it to a local Halloween gathering this weekend. Before Halloween I’ll probably add some sculpted arms, but for now he can wear a long sleeve shirt. I’ll post the finished crawler at some point. Continue Reading »

In 2006 we lost the shelving unit we had been using for our witches kitchen. It had fallen over in storage and was broken beyond repair. (wasn’t in good shape to begin with) So we were going to need something to replace it.
I made these shelves to replace the broken one

I picked up some old Continue Reading »

I never seem to have enough skulls come Halloween, they are great ‘fillers’ in any display.
Pictured below is a polyurethane foam skull I recently cast from a dragon-skin mold. The skull was carved with a dremel and painted with acrylics.
